Loose horses on the road caused traffic delays in Conisbrough last night.

Police were called to the scene on Low Road at about 8.15pm.

Residents told how several police cars and the force helicopter swarmed the area and traffic was backed up for about an hour until officers managed to get the animals under control.

One resident, a 49-year-old mum-of-one who did not want to be named, said: “We were all wondering what had happened. The traffic was really backed up but they opened the road again after about an hour.”

Residents had speculated on Facebook that there had been a shooting, but police said they had no record of such an incident.

On the same evening police executed search warrants at two premises in Mexborough and Conisbrough.

Officers were looking for drugs but did not find anything and no arrests were made.

A police spokeswoman said the search warrants and loose horse incident “would have led to quite a lot of police activity in the area so that may be where the rumours have come from.”
