The office of the Police and Crime Commissioner is looking for volunteers to be Independent Custody Visitors in the Barnsley area.

Independent Custody Visitors check on the treatment of people in police custody, the conditions in which they are held and ensure that their rights and entitlements are being observed.

This is your chance to offer protection to both detainees and the police and reassurance to the community at large whilst gaining an insight into the criminal Justice system.

Volunteers are needed to visit detainees in Barnsley and Ecclesfield Police Station Custody Suites which should take a maximum of a few hours, but usually much less, a couple of times a month at a time that is suitable for them.

Full training will be given and reasonable out of pocket expenses paid.

Volunteers must be over 18 years of age and because of the need to be independent; serving police officers and other serving members of the police, special constables, lay justices cannot be independent custody visitors.

To apply or for more details, please send expressions of interest and contact details to: twebster@syjs.gov.uk by 4pm on Friday 14 June, 2013. Application Forms will be sent out on Monday 17 June, 2013.
