A 23-year-old Doncaster woman has reportedly been sexually assaulted in broad daylight.

At around 10.15am yesterday morning the woman was walking along Athelstane Road, Conisbrough, when an unknown man grabbed her from behind.

We want to reassure the local community that we are taking this latest report very seriously and a thorough investigation has begun to establish whether it is indeed connected.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Singleton

He attempted to touch the woman inappropriately but she managed to break free and fell to the floor.

The man is then believed to have fled the scene.

The suspect is described as being around 6ft tall and was wearing dark clothing with a balaclava.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Singleton said: “This incident has left the victim shaken and distressed. Luckily, she was not seriously injured as a result of this man’s actions.

“We want to hear from anyone who may have been in the area yesterday morning that may have witnessed suspicious activity.”

Investigating officers are exploring the possibility that this incident may be linked to previous reports of sexual assaults in the Denaby Crags area.

Following a number of reports of indecent exposure and sexual assaults on women in Denaby Crags between April and November last year, police and partner agencies have carried out work to improve visibility and safety in that area.

DCI Singleton continued: “As part of our ongoing investigation into the series of sexual assaults in Denaby Crags last year, we increased our patrols and used the force’s Mounted and Dogs sections to provide a visible police presence.

“Work has also been done to cut down the trees in that area and change the environment, to try and make it feel more open and safe.

“We are not aware of any further reports of this nature in the Crags area since late last year. We want to reassure the local community that we are taking this latest report very seriously and a thorough investigation has begun to establish whether it is indeed connected.”

Police are keeping an open mind as to whether the offences have been carried out by more than one person and a number of people have been arrested in connection with the incidents.

One man remains on police bail.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 279 of February 26, 2015, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
