A man has been jailed for five years for a raping a woman at her home in Doncaster.

David John Doherty, 48, of St James Street, Doncaster, pleaded guilty to rape at a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday 26 November.

The offence took place at an address in the Hyde Park area of Doncaster in August 2013.

The victim did not report it at the time, as she was scared of the offender, who was known to her.

She found the courage to come forward and tell police in March 2014 and Doherty was arrested and charged with the offence.

He was sentenced to five years in prison and must sign the sex offenders’ register for life.

Investigating officer DC Stephen Cartlidge said: “This case shows that regardless of when an offence took place, if a victim comes forward they will be taken seriously and we will investigate thoroughly.

“We have specially-trained officers in place who work with victims from the moment a rape is reported, gathering every piece of evidence in order to secure a conviction.”
