BLACK ice brought chaos to parts of the Dearne Valley this morning and caused a number of schools to delay opening times.
Weather experts say the problem was caused by so-called ‘freezing rain’ - when the rain freezes on impact, covering surfaces with ice.
Schools which delayed opening times included Wath C of E Primary School, West Meadows, Hoyland, St Helen’s School, Hoyland, Heathergarth Primary, Carrfield Academy and Darfield Valley School.
Police and fire service are warning drivers to take extreme care on the roads after more than 40 accidents were reported across South Yorkshire.
A police car, fire engine and paramedic car were among five vehicles involved in a crash at Barnsley Road, Sheffield.
South Yorkshire Travel said buses are running as normal.
Doncaster Council sent out a tweet warning people to ‘be careful when travelling around Doncaster, black ice on some routes. Council out treating now but take care till we reach your area’.
