Police in Doncaster are re-appealing for residents to lock up after a woman’s handbag was stolen by an opportunist offender.
The culprit struck between 5.30pm and 10.40pm on Wednesday, February 26 at Ascot Avenue in Cantley.
They entered through an unlocked door and grabbed the bag from a kitchen worktop, while the occupant was upstairs.
The bag contained a small amount of cash and bank cards, one of which was later tried at a cash machine, though no money was obtained.
Said Superintendent Eddie Murphy, of South Yorkshire Police: “Prevention is always better than cure. People should make sure they lock their doors, even if they’re in the house, and put the keys in a safe place.”
A householder also scared off an offender at 7.30pm on Wednesday at Masham Court, Cantley.
Continued Supt Murphy: “The occupant came into the kitchen and saw an arm reaching through an insecure window next to the back door. The key had been left in the lock and the occupant believes the offender was trying to turn the key. They shouted and the culprit ran off. Luckily nothing was stolen….this time.”
