Pedestrian safety will be the focus in the borough as part of a global campaign.
In 2012, 638 pedestrians were killed or injured on South Yorkshire roads.
Joanne Wehrle, Road Safety Education Manager for the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnerships explains: “So much has been provided for pedestrian safety over the years, but advice often gets forgotten or simply ignored. If crossings are available, please use them, they are provided for your safety. Avoid crossing the road between parked cars or on blind corners. Be aware of what is going on around you and be sure the driver has seen you before you cross. Using MP3 players and mobile phones distract you from traffic on the roads. Try to avoid using them until you have crossed safely.”
A campaign is underway to encourage pedestrians to wear bright reflective clothing. Further rinformation can be found by visiting the Lifewise website at www.lifewise999.co.uk/road-safety.
