Conisbrough airman honoured after 60 years
ONE of Conisbrough’s unsung war heroes has finally been honoured on the town’s war memorial, 62 years after he died.
The name of Kenneth Brown was added to the memorial off Old Road, by Doncaster Council, after a member of his extended family contacted the authority.
For the first time his story has been officially added to the roll call of Conisbrough’s war dead. Airman Brown was in the Fleet Air Arm delivering planes to HMS Glorious at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands, off the northeast coast of Scotland.
The squadron was there to provide air cover for British forces landing in Norway. He was a Naval Airman First Class in 303 squadron and a navigator.
Mrs Joan O’Brien of Laburnum Road, Balby told the Times that during one of the flights, the pilot lost control and ditched into the sea, in May , 1940.
She said: “The pilot survived, but to our knowledge Kenneth is still in his seat at the bottom of Scapa Flow.
“I understand He had a sister and other family in Conisbrough, where he grew up.
“We don’t know why he wasn’t put on the memorial at the time, but I’m told this is quite often the case.
“He was the half-brother of my aunt Lillian, a member of the Fox family who lived in Conisbrough.
“My Aunt is 93 and it is something she wanted to put right before she died.
“His step brother John Fox is also on the memorial and two more members of the family through marriage”.
The O’Brien’s contacted Doncaster Council and Kenneth’s name was added on a small stone inscription alongside JC Peace, who died in World War One.
Sarah Hacket, secretary of the Conisbrough and Denaby branch of the Royal British Legion, said the name had been a mystery to them after it had been added.
She said: “We spotted the name had been added on Remembrance Sunday and a couple of members asked me if I knew who it was.
“I am glad he has been recognised at last”.
She said she planned to contact the family and arrange a dedication ceremony for Airman Brown.
