THE national campaign ‘Save Our Working Men’s Clubs’ will step up action tonight with a bumper fundraiser at Wombwell.
Planned as a celebration of clubs’ vital role within communities, the evening will feature six top acts, all donating their services for free.
‘Punter with Passion’ Graham Bonser of Wombwell WMC is a main figure behind the Facebook campaign, that is now supported by thousands of members.
He was among a party that took their cause to London last week, to lobby politicians over vital issues, including smoking room laws.
Graham, 59, said: “Working Men’s Clubs are closing at a rate of seven a week, Wombwell was set to close up to 18 months ago, but we were saved by our own financial wizard Teresa Foulstone.
“She helped to turn the club around and it remains a hub for everyone from kids of 18 to our oldest member at 89.
“We are looking for ways to halt the trend of club closures, by such means as reduced rates and a change to the law to allow smoking rooms in privately licensed clubs.
“And we want to fetch people away from their televisions to take in the atmosphere of live entertainment”.
Tonight (July 7) the fun at Station Road, Wombwell, will include music, comedy and camaraderie.
All are welcome from 7.30pm.
