Celebrating the Isle’s heritage - Slideshow

Waiting for Video...

A MAJOR event showcasing the Isle’s heritage was staged at the weekend as part of celebrations to mark the 175th anniversary of Epworth Mechanics’ Institute Library.

The open day, held on Saturday, drew scores of visitors from across the area.

Residents enjoyed looking at a time-line depicting the area’s history, which featured details of events and activities at the institute since it was opened by businessman William Read in 1837.

There was a display of old pictures of the Isle of Axholme and copies of the Epworth Bells dating back more than 100 years were exhibited.

Residents also took a look at the Epworth Town Council Facsimile Domesday Book. A raffle took place, with the top prize being a flight for two people from the Real Aeroplane Club near Howden.

Visitors also enjoyed looking around a number of stalls from community groups and organisations.

In addition, staff received a number of donations to a fund which will pay for the restoration of old copies of the Bells.
