Cash benefits for people in battle against cancer

PEOPLE battling cancer, heart disease or recovering from a stroke will benefit from a new service thanks to a £290,000 lottery grant.

Doncaster’s Citizens’ Advice Bureau has been awarded the money to help support families who may have to stop work during their treatment or to look after a loved one.

The charity had previously run a similar service through funding from Macmillan Cancer Support and Doncaster Council.

But after funding ran out in March the bureau had to stop offering help to people battling serious illnesses.

The new funding will pay for two advisors who will see around 500 people a year for the next five years. They will offer advice about the available benefits and how to avoid debts mounting up if people suddenly lose their main income because of illness.

Matthew Bennie, director of the charity based in Old Guildhall Yard near Marks and Spencer, said: “This will allow people to get better and cope with their condition without having to be stress about finances.

“It is not just the person who gets ill who suffer, it is family members too.

“This money is a great boost to us, but at the same time is only really enough to scratch the surface of the demand in Doncaster.

“Doncaster has one of the highest rates in the country for people having cancer, strokes and serious heart disease and there are probably enough people with cancer for us just to deal with them without the other conditions.

“The lottery has recognised a real need for this kind of support in this area and means we should be able to reduce the stress around money issues so people can focus on getting better.”

It is hoped the service will be up and running within the next few weeks as recruitment of the two new advisors is currently taking place.
