The pie truly is the limit for hungry diners hoping to join Doncaster’s upper crust.
For you’ll need more than dedication if you want to be a record breaker – you’ll also need to be a real speed demon when it comes to taking on the latest eating challenge at the town’s Yorkshire Pie House.
Andy Milner, owner of the Silver Street eatery, is staging a charity speed-eating contest – and is looking for brave souls to wolf down a 650g chicken and ham pie in the fastest time possible, to help raise funds for a young Doncaster cancer victim.
Andy has already set the early pace – an incredible 95 seconds to munch down the pie, which is about the same size as a microwave meal for one.
He said: “This is a challenge that’s not for the faint hearted. It’s really tough-going but it is all fun and for a good cause.”
The rules are simple – diners have to eat the pie as quickly as they can, using whatever means they wish to swallow it down, to earn a place on the leaderboard which is on show in the shop.
Last year, the shop staged a Man v Pie challenge where competitors had to each as much pie as they could in an hour.
Andy said: “That one was really hard going. Even a pie lover like myself found that one hard work. Our latest challenge is a lot more accessible for everyone to have a go.”
In the interests of research, a team from South Yorkshire Newspapers took on the challenge with four brave souls tucking in.
Editor in chief Chris Burton, content editor Chris Page, sports reporter Liam Hoden and chief reporter Darren Burke all did battle against the clock – with Darren pipping Liam to the office honours with a time of just over 203 seconds to claim the crown and fourth place on the overall leaderboard.
Chris Page limped in last in a time of 506 seconds – while the other Chris didn’t even manage to finish his plate.
But the competition has a serious side – entry fees are in aid of Intake youngster Alfie Hughes who is battling neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer.

A man who has made eating a television phenomenon
American TV host Adam Richman has made an art form out of eating challenges.
His show Man v Food sees him trekking the length and breadth of America to take on fearsome dining challenges.
He has tackled extremely hot and spicy dishes, large platefuls and belly-busting dishes since the show first took to the airwaves in December 2008.
Despite the frightening nature of some of the dishes on offer, the star keeps himself in trim, exercising regularly and spending up to an hour on the treadmill after each eating challenge to help stay in shape.
He prepares for his challenges by not eating the day before and drinking water and soda to stay hydrated.
