ALMOST 100 traders have signed up to a scheme designed to boost the borough’s economy by encouraging residents to shop local.

The Top of the Shops scheme will see businesses pledge to offer the best customer service. In turn it is hoped the highest standards of customer care will mean firms receive repeat custom boosting their profits.

Mayor Peter Davies took a trip to the market to launch the initiative, paying a visit to Angus Butchers, one of the businesses signed up.

Shops involved in the scheme range from high street giants such as Waterstones and Superdrug, to independent retailers and market traders such as the Crusty Cob bakery and Beadbobbin craft stall.

Mr Davies said: “We are the best loved market place and fourth most regenerated high street in the country. This scheme is to improve and build on this.

“I am delighted that we are going to be celebrating our strong town centre retail offer, which is popular with residents and tourists alike, showcasing the high levels of customer service that many of our traders offer.”

Shops taking part will display a Top of the Shops logo and will be regularly visited by mystery shoppers to ensure they are achieving certain levels of customer service.

Butcher’s assistant Lisa Jackson from Angus Butchers said: “People come to the market because they want to be offered a personal service and great customer service.”

Sue Tsikanakis, owner of Kostas’s Olive bar added: “We signed up as I think we provide a good service to our customers.”
