Open day today in Epworth for £1.7m countryside improvement scheme
Residents are being asked to come forward and say how they would like to see the Isle’s countryside improved as part of a £1.7 million project.
Humberhead Levels, which incorporates parts of Haxey, Westwoodside, Misterton and Keadby, is one of 12 Nature Improvement Areas (NIA) in England which is set to be restored.
The NIA action plan has £1.7 million funding from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to improve 1,427 hectares of wetland.
The Humberhead Levels Landscape Partnership, which is part of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT), has now organised a public drop-in session for residents to put forward their ideas of how to use the money.
YWT spokeswoman Joanna Richards said: “The Isle of Axholme is right in the middle of the Humberhead Levels area and we would like people to have their say on how we should spend the money.
“We will be asking people about ways to improve wetlands and nature reserves generally.
“This includes things like clearing overgrowth from along watersides to make it more habitable for wildlife.
“It is a three year project which is due to run until 2015.
“We will use residents’ feedback to help us to decide how to move forward with the scheme.
“Because the funding runs out in two years time, the partnership will also use ideas to help with funding applications beyond 2015.”
People can speak to project leaders and put forward their views at Imperial Hall, Chapel Street, Epworth, on Friday, from 2pm to 6.30pm.
Representatives from the partnership will be displaying maps of area.
