THINK of the best hotels in the world and you’ll probably conjure up thoughts of New York, Rio and Paris.

Well think again because one of the globe’s hottest stays is on Thorne Road, Doncaster!

And that’s because the humble Caribbean Hotel has scooped a string of awards from influential travel website Trip Advisor.

The 15-bedroom hotel, owned by brothers Dene Flanagan and Troy Austin, was named eighth best bargain hotel in the world, fifth best in Europe, second best in the UK and number 18 for best service overall in the Travellers’ Choice Awards, voted for by site users.

Delighted Dene said: “We were absolutely amazed. But we put it down to hard work, offering a great service and bargain prices.”

The awards, often dubbed the “Oscars of the hotel world,” are now in their 11th year, with the Caribbean picked from more than 650,000 hotels collected in a single year from travellers around the world.

Added Dene: “We were flabbergasted when we found out we had done so well. We thought it was a hoax. We know we’ve been number one in Doncaster for a while, beating the major chain hotels so it came as a real shock to see we had done so well around the world.”

Dene and Troy, who took over the hotel from their mum in 2001, have spent thousands of pounds in recent years to restore the building to its Victorian glory and have welcomed a string of visitors from all walks of life through the doors.

In the 1960s, a host of stars stopped at the venue including The Kinks, Coronation Street star Lynne Perrie and Freddie and The Dreamers and the Caribbean is now a popular destination for visitors coming to enjoy the town’s night life.

Added Dene: “Everyone loves a bargain and in this day and age, when everyone is looking to make savings, we offer what they want. It is hard work and its tough but its very satisfying when your efforts are rewarded like this.”

Richard Young of Doncaster Tourism said: “I think it is absolutely fantastic news. It shows how tourism in Doncaster is improving and increasing.”
