A new B&M store is set to open its doors this summer, retail bosses have confirmed.

The budget retailer will open a new store at the former Tesco site in Church View.

The store is expected to open on August 6 and create a number of new jobs.

A spokesman for B&M said: “I am delighted to confirm this week that B&M Retail will be opening a new store in Doncaster; occupying the former Tesco on Church View.

“A comprehensive internal and external refurbishment programme will be completed and the new B&M Home store will open on Thursday 6th August.”

Work is currently underway at the site.

This will be the third B&M store occupied by the budget retailer that also has stores in Thorne Retail Park, Ogden Road and Danum Retail Park.

A figure has not yet been given on the number of jobs set to be created but is expected to be in the region of around 60.

The news comes after B&M has created another 60 jobs in Doncaster after opening at the former Comet on the Danum Retail Park in the town last May.

The site has been derelict since supermarket giant Tesco closed its doors in April resulting in the loss of 125 jobs.

Tesco confirmed at the start of the year the Doncaster site was included in a list of 43 ‘unprofitable’ stores that would be shutting around the country.

Falling sales and profit warnings resulted in Tesco announcing the store closures plan.

The firm had previously shelved plans to open a further 49 new stores - including a new supermarket at Capitol Park in Thorne, This scheme would have created about 130 new jobs.

Dave Lewis, chief executive officer for Tesco, said at the time:“The decision to close the stores has been exceptionally difficult to take.”
