Jobless figure up 15 per cent

THE number of people on the jobs scrapheap in Doncaster borough is up 15 per cent in a year, official unemployment figures reveal.

February’s figure of 11,252 compares with 9,740 for the same period in 2011 and is up from 10,959 in January.

Doncaster North - which includes Mexborough - saw a rise to 3,786, compared to 3,721 in January and only 3,286 back in February 2011.

In Don Valley, which includes Conisborough, the latest figure is 3,032, which is up from 2,942 last month, and 2,654 a year ago.

Nationally, the unemployment rate is at a near 17-year high after the latest rise.

The Government said there were signs that the labour market was “stabilising” with the number of people in work increasing by 9,000 to 29.1 million.

The 28,000 increase in unemployment was the lowest for almost a year.

Public sector employment has fallen by 270,000 in the past year.
