New regulations mean that private landlords in the Isle could face a £5,000 fine for failing to ensure a smoke alarm is fitted in their property.
The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations 2015 came into force on October 1. It requires landlords of private rented accommodation to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their properties.
Data from the Chief Fire Officers’ Association indicates the move could result in 231 fewer deaths and 5,860 less injuries nationally. It only requires the fitting of a smoke detector in the hallway/landing of each storey of a property and a carbon monoxide alarm in the same room as a solid fuel appliance.
