Firms get insight into green energy industry
BUSINESSES keen to secure work in the renewable energy sector have been urged to face the market’s challenges “head-on” to maximise supply chain opportunities.
At a recent supply chain conference in Doncaster, experts in the green energy industry outlined the growing potential for the region’s companies to play a role.
But firms were urged to reduce costs, ensure their workforces were properly equipped to meet the needs of global players.
Around 100 business people, including representatives of Doncaster Chamber, attended Renewable Energy: A Guide For Business at Doncaster Racecourse earlier this month.
Tim Shaw, partner at Yorkshire law firm Nabarro, which sponsored the event, told delegates that the renewables agenda was a once in a lifetime opportunity for Yorkshire and Humber businesses across the supply chain.
“They must face head-on the challenges of driving costs down, up-skilling the workforce and winning funding support if they are to deliver high quality goods and services to the burgeoning renewable energy sector,
“Success will position businesses as market-leading suppliers to the sector, both nationally and internationally,” he added.
Businesses were also given an overview of key renewables developments in the region including proposed offshore wind turbine assembly plus technology including solar power and heat pumps.
Andrew Morton, account director of Footprint Renewables, said one of the key themes to emerge was the need for companies across Yorkshire and the Humber to consider working more closely together to form a “super-cluster” of firms for the renewables sector.
“By combining the manufacturing experience and expertise of businesses in South Yorkshire with the activity being seen around the Humber ports – particularly with offshore wind industry – our region can become a true powerhouse for green energy commerce,” he added.
