Motorists are facing disruption as day-time road lane closures start on St George’s Bridge.
From Sunday, June 28, two lanes on the bridge will be closed day and night while maintenance works are carried out there
Diversions will be used for up to 10 weeks.
All traffic will come into the town centre from York Road along the North Bridge.
But vehicles heading out of the town centre to the north of Doncaster will do so across the remaining lanes of the St George’s Bridge.
Bosses at Doncaster Council say that the phased out of town carriageway closures on St. George’s Bridge will enable the authority to undertake essential maintenance work on bridge joints that are in need of replacement.
These carriageway closures have been scheduled to minimise the impact on drivers, according to officials at the council and will be clearly signposted for the duration of work.
Road users heading out of Doncaster should proceed to the roundabout near Doncaster College where they will be guided on to St George’s Bridge, as North Bridge Road will be closed for outbound traffic.
Drivers wanting to come in to Doncaster from the A638 / A19 St Mary’s roundabout will be re-routed over North Bridge.
Buses and lorries will be advised to use the left hand lane after Marsh Gate junction.
When they reach the A630, Church Way, they will be directed left, while drivers of other vehicles will be able to turn right at a newly constructed junction and proceed under the Frenchgate underpass if they wish.
Access to and from the Marsh Gate area will remain as normal.
But Marsh Gate will will only be reachable from the St Mary’s roundabout end of North Bridge.
While the work is ongoing, the bus stop located on North Bridge near its junction with Church Way will be temporarily relocated.
Its new location will be nearby on Church View, by Doncaster Minster, says officials..
Director of regeneration and environment, Peter Dale, said: “This is the final phase of the vital maintenance work on St. George’s Bridge and, once completed, will be beneficial to Doncaster’s road users.
“These improvements will allow us to keep future disruption to members of the public minimal, and improve our capacity to deal with future incidents.”
“We thank residents for their patience while the work has been ongoing, and ask that everyone bears with us while this final stage is completed. Road signs will be clearly displayed to direct people where they need to go, so please follow these directions.”
