Businesses from across Doncaster strapped on their football boots to take part in a five-a-side tournament to raise money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Big-hearted staff from 16 town firms played in the inaugural Denton & Nickels Cup at the Goals complex in Wheatley Hills.

The tournament raised more than £1000 for Make it Better appeal, which is helping to fund an extensive transformation of the hospital and will see the construction of a new wing, a bright, spacious outpatients department, courtyard and play tower.

Brian O’Sullivan, marketing manager at tournament sponsors Denton & Nickels, said the building services specialists chose to support the charity as they have been completing work on the hospital refurbishment.

He added: “While working at the hospital we have appreciated first-hand the world-class care provided to children from the UK and overseas. Impressed by the commitment shown by hospital staff, our team wanted to support the appeal by creating and implementing a series of events to help raise £25,000. The Denton & Nickels Cup has been a great way to ‘kick-off’ our fundraising.”

Emma Dove, corporate fundraiser at The Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “The fact that Denton & Nickels were inspired to support us after being involved in the redevelopment themselves is testament to the incredible staff and patients.” A team from St Leger Homes were named cup winners.
