STAFF at online retailer Amazon are enjoying Christmas shopping spree today during one of the busiest days ever at the firm’s Doncaster depot.

Dubbed Cyber Monday, the firm is tipping today to be the busiest online shopping day of the year and setting new records with more than £550 million expected to be spent in total on online purchases across the country.

Orders are due to peak at around 9.20pm - with almost three million items flying off the shelves at the firm’s eight distribution depots across the country including the firm’s sprawling Doncaster warehouse, which covers an areas the size of more than six football pitches.

Doncaster general manager Nicola Sweeney said: “We are really ramping things up now. Cyber Monday is always our busiest day but its not over yet. The next few weeks are set to be an exceptionally busy time for us.”

Cyber Monday - the day when the most online orders are placed - has been growing in size in recent years with analysts predicting that sales would be up 36 per cent on last year’s totals.

The firm has prepared for the festive bonanza by taking on more than 10,000 seasonal employees across the country - and the shopping spree is set to continue right up until December 25 - although even then, there will be no rest for workers.

“Christmas Day is now one of our biggest online shopping days,” added Nicola.
