A DETERMINED dad has said boxing has changed his life after it helped him lose nearly five stones in as many months.
Weighing just over 17 stones, Dave Pickersgill was desperate to change his lifestyle after noticing his appearance on photographs, always feeling tired and eating the wrong type of foods.
The 32-year-old’s wishes were granted when a new boxing academy opened up just yards from his home in Woodfield Road, Balby.
Since attending his first session in January at the Balby Boxing Academy in Weston Road, Dave has lost an impressive 66lbs in five months - taking his weight to 12st 6lbs.
He is also teetotal now and is thinking about entering boxing competitions when the new season starts next month following expert coaching through the Amateur Boxing Association.
Dave, father to Georgia, 11, Alex, 10, and seven-year-old Joel - who joins him at the gym sometimes, said: “Boxing has changed everything in my life. It has helped me change my diet, the way I think about exercise and my fitness.
“Before boxing, I was eating bad food and drinking four cans of alcohol a day, I would eat five takeaways a week and not do any form of exercise.
“From day one I was made to feel welcome at the academy and was respected as an individual which drove me to a new direction in my life.
“I was given dietary advice and training both in and out of the gym. The coaching team pushed me to do more as they knew I had the determination.
“The weight-loss I have achieved has been done through hard work and good food management. I cut out all snacks and fizzy drinks, however I still think it is important to allow myself a treat now and again.
“My alcohol intake is now zero which was the hardest part, but now I get a better buzz from seeing the changes on the scales and being able to run miles. This is better than any buzz from alcohol.”
Dave has also been even more determined to take his hobby further having seen gold medal success in the Olympics from Yorkshire boxers Nicola Adams and Luke Campbell.
He said: “During the Olympics I was realy inspired. I know when I hit the gym in the new season in September, I am going to work hard to get into the best shape I can for compitition.
“I think it’s important for other men at a similar age to look at stories like mine and change the way they live, if they want to.”
