Work is due to start before Christmas on improvements to the public toilets in The Green in Thorne.

The toilets will be completely refurbished internally so that an attractive, modern facility is provided for the town.

A spokesman for Thorne and Moorends Town Council said: “Internally they currently provide a poor quality facility, but the building is structurally sound. The improvements have been designed to be hard wearing, avoiding an ‘industrial’ approach that has been used in other areas.”

Town mayor Councillor Richard Walker added: “These toilets have been allowed to run down over a number of years, and were in danger of closure. The town council took them over from Doncaster MBC to prevent closure, and have now managed to secure a funding package to allow them to be comprehensively improved which will secure a much needed facility in the centre of the town”.

Grant funding for the scheme was been secured through the Town Centre Innovation Fund, supplemented by funding contributions from the town council and Doncaster MBC. The toilets will be closed for about three weeks to allow the works to be carried out.
