The number of people who are long-term unemployed in Barnsley East has almost doubled in just over three years.
MP Michael Dugher is now calling on ministers to do more to tackle unemployment in his constituency, which includes Wombwell and Darfield.
Mr Dugher said: “Since the election long-term unemployment in Barnsley East has increased by 63 per cent and long-term youth unemployment in the Barnsley Local Authority is up 67 per cent in the same time period.”
Figures from Mr Dugher’s office reveal there were 895 people in Barnsley East claiming Job Seekers’ Allowance (JSA) for more than 12 months in November 2013 compared with 550 in May 2010.
There were 400 young people aged 18 to 24 claiming JSA for more than 12 months across Barnsley in November 2013. This is compared to 240 in May 2010.
