Awards for river rescue heroes

Firefighters from Dearne Fire Station, near Manvers, who rescued a father and son from a flooded weir, have been handed an award for their heroism.

Crews from Doncaster, Edlington and Dearne fire stations were honoured for their role in the rescue when water levels along the River Don peaked during flooding last July.

The father and son’s dinghy becamse trapped in a weir, with the father ending up in the water. A firefighter abseiled down into the water and secured the father, until a hauling system was rigged up and the rescue was completed with the help of both crews. The crews are pictured at the presentation at Dearne Fire Station.
