A TRAINING provider has brushed up on its own skills with the help of business support experts – and is now training dozens of apprentices.

Doncaster-based Intertrain, which provides railway training and assessment, has worked with Beta Technology under the Success Doncaster programme to maximise its business potential.

Operations director Alex Pond explained: “Beta has really acted as a mentor to us in terms of improving our systems and suggesting different approaches to things outside our areas of expertise.”

Training people not in work or education and tapping into new funding streams are among the developments resulting from advice provided by Beta business buddy Irshad Akbar.

“I can’t explain how valuable he has been to us,” said Mr Pond. “We know all about the rail industry and training but when it came to things like marketing, we needed some advice.”

Intertrain now has about 40 apprentices learning everything from mechanics to welding.

Eight apprentice welders are currently enrolled under a partnership project with Doncaster-based Skyblue Rail North. One trainee is even receiving free driving lessons via the Prince’s Trust.

One month into his apprenticeship, Edlington teenager Ricky Clarke, 18, described it as the best course he’d ever done.

He added: “I was on Jobseekers Allowance before and now I want to get a good job and turn things around.”

Mr Akbar said: “The company was already successful but had been meandering along doing the same things in the same ways. The potential was there for more and I’m very impressed with what its achieved.”
