Appeal after M1 ‘Marmite’ chaos

DONCASTER motorists who witnessed the “Marmite” spillage that closed the M1 are being asked to come forward and speak to police.

Police closed the motorway in both directions between junctions 32 and 33 near Sheffield after the lorry crashed and spilt its contents onto the carriageway on Sunday evening around 10.15pm.

A Ford campervan was travelling slowly in lane 1 up Guilthwaite Hill on the M1 southbound carriageway between junction 33 Catcliffe and heading towards junction 32.

A white Renault heavy goods vehicle travelling in the same direction tried to overtake and the back of the tanker caught the wing mirror of the campervan, resulting in the lorry diver loosing control.

The motorway reopened about 10am on Monday.

Police are appealing for witnesses to call 101 quoting incident number 1240 of the 28 November.
