Ailing tour operator’s staff facing job losses

A TOUR operator is proposing to close one of its Doncaster shops and axe staff as part of recovery plans.

Thomas Cook, which recently merged with Co-op Travel after posting losses of nearly £400 million, plans to shut 115 shops nationwide in a bid to turn the business around.

Thomas Cook in Doncaster’s High Street has been pinpointed as one to close leaving seven workers facing the axe.

A Thomas Cook spokesman confirmed affected staff were to enter into a 90-day consultation over their futures.

She said: “The consultation will discuss whether staff can be redeployed, however, nothing will happen until March 17.”

She added that the Thomas Cook, Co-op Travel and Ilkeston Co-op Travel shops all in St Sepulchre Gate, would remain open.
