FOUR former mental health staff have finally been charged with a catalogue of abuse against 18 vulnerable people in their care.
All four worked with patients with serious learning difficulties at the Solar Centre in St Catherine’s Hospital, Balby, but a confidential NHS report leaked to the Free Press showed a catalogue of abuse at the centre.
Now after dropping the case twice in four years due to lack of evidence, the Crown Prosecution has charged James Hinds, 58, with 14 charges of ill-treatment and neglect to patients; Susan Murphy, 43, with 13 charges; Julie Burge, 48, with three charges, and Michael Barnard, 49 with eight charges.
Richard Hebbert, lawyer in the Complex Casework Unit for CPS Yorkshire and Humberside: “I have today authorised South Yorkshire Police to commence proceedings for a prosecution against four people relating to the ill-treatment and wilful neglect of patients receiving treatment for mental health disorders at the Solar Centre at St Catherine’s Hospital, Doncaster.
“A full review of all of the evidence in this case has been conducted and I am satisfied that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to prosecute.”
James Hinds and Susan Murphy are due to appear at Doncaster Magistrates Court on Tuesday, August 28 with Julie Burge and Michael Barnard scheduled to appear on Monday, September 10.
See the Free Press tomorrow for full details.
