Police keep open mind over death of pub landlady
POLICE investigating the death of a woman in Mexborough say they are "keeping an open mind" about the case.
The body of 55-year-old Marie Ann Booth was found at the foot of a high wall in the back yard of a shop in High Street, Mexborough on Thursday night (May 8).
A 62-year-old man was arrested on Friday and questioned on suspicion of murder, but he was released without charge on Sunday and police are understood to no longer regard the case as a murder inquiry.
A post mortem examination revealed that Ms Booth, who lived on High Street and was landlady of the Bull's Head pub, died after suffering head injuries.
A police spokeswoman said: "The police investigation is almost concluded but we are awaiting the final reports from the Forensic Science Service and Home Office pathologist and until they are received we remain open minded about Ms Booth's death".
In a press statement Ms Booth's daughter, Joanne Woodburn, said: "Marie Ann Booth was a fantastic woman who will be sadly missed by her family and everyone who knew her."
The Ambulance Service was called shortly before 11pm on Thursday and paramedics pronounced Mrs Booth dead at the scene.
The Bull's Head pub and Paula's Sandwich Bar were cordoned off by police throughout Friday while forensic examinations took place. Both businesses reopened on Monday, and floral tributes were left outside the Bull's Head over the weekend.
It is the second tragedy in little over a month to hit the family. Marie Booth was the aunt of boxer Scott Brookes, who died in April after a collision with a taxi in Swinton.
Part of High Street was closed to vehicles from its junction with Bank Street and Garden Street was also closed on Friday.
