A MOTORIST who knocked down a schoolboy on a blind corner is backing the victim's family, in calling for safety measures to be introduced on the "dangerous" road.
Nicola Sanderson was driving along Denaby Lane at Old Denaby when 15-year-old Joe Winfield came out from behind his school bus on a corner.
He collided with the front of Ms Sanderson's Mitsubishi Shogun and suffered a broken hand, shattered knee
cap and broken nose.
The lad survived and his mum Catherine is now calling for highways bosses to investigate ways of improving safety at the spot, to prevent further accidents.
And Ms Sanderson, who knows the family, regularly uses the road and is also backing their campaign.
The 36-year-old mum – who was exonerated of any blame in the accident – explained: "There was nothing I could do – he came out of nowhere.
"But I am not saying it was his fault; it was just wrong place at the wrong time. The bus was parked on a blind corner.
Extremely worried
"I am a mother myself and I had my two boys in the car, I was extremely worried.
"But thankfully – although Joe was injured – it was not worse.
"I was not speeding either, but there are a lot of other drivers who use the road that do go over the 30mph limit.
"If it had been one of those drivers then he might have been killed.
"I use the road myself every week and I often see the kinds of speeds some drivers get up to.
"It is not only residents who are concerned about this, it is motorists as well."
Residents in the village are now considering gathering signatures for a petition.
They plan to lobby Doncaster Council to look at the problems.
Mrs Sanderson is backing both moves..
"I am not sure what could be done, wether it be speed bumps or bollards, but I would definitely sign the petition and lend my support."
Doncaster Council confirmed on Tuesday that they will probe the issues raised.
Director of Neighbour-hoods and Communities, Jane Miller, said: "The council deals with residents' enquiries on traffic and road safety issues, and will be happy to investigate any concerns relating to Denaby Lane."
