50 years of being good Samaritans

Doncaster Samaritans celebrates its 50th birthday this week – in the same year as the national organisation reaches its diamond anniversary.

The occasion will be marked at the listening group’s AGM, which takes place at Castle Park at 7.30pm tomorrow.

Volunteer Geoff Parker said: “It’s quite an achievement for the charity and it should be good evening.”

Geoff got involved with the Samaritans after meeting a member at an evening class two years ago.

He said: “It just caught my interest. Since I’ve been involved I’ve got a great deal of satisfaction from being able to help people out.

The organisation is combining the celebrations with an appeal for new volunteers to come along to man its phones.

Geoff said: “The satisfaction you get from helping someone is all you need as an incentive – I can’t express that too highly. It’s worth its weight in gold.”

Keynote speaker at Thursday’s meeting is Elaine Hanzack, who will talk about mental health issues, and a buffet will also be provided.
