Today PERFORMING ARTS: Barnsley Civic – In the Shadow of Picture Frames. Starts 7.30pm.

Fusing daring contemporary circus, innovative digital media and beautiful physical performance, In the Shadow of Picture Frames is an imaginative and spectacular performance that has the audience on the edge of their seat as the mystery unravels.

CLASSICAL MUSIC: Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and their principal conductor Vasily Petrenko return to Sheffield City Hall with an all Sibelius programme in the Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall from 7pm. Tickets 15.

THEATRE: Rotherham Civic Theatre – Footloose. Rotherham Teachers' Operatic Society's Footloose explodes onto stage with classic 80s anthems such as Holding Out For a Hero, Almost Paradise, Let's Hear it for the Boy and of course the title track, Footloose.

Life in small town Beaumont is peaceful until city boy, Ren arrives. Breaking every taboo, Ren brings back dance to the heart of a town held back by the memory of a tragedy.

Based on the 80s movie, the show runs to Saturday (November7). Curtain 7.15pm Tickets full price 10, concessions 9 (Thursday night only).

Sheffield Lyceum – the Pitmen Painters. In 1934, a group of Ashington Miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint.

This humourous and deeply moving play by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, Cooking with Elvis) arrives in Sheffield following sell-out seasons at Live Theatre, Newcastle and the National Theatre. Runs to Saturday, November 7. Tickets: 12.50-23.50. Call the box office on 0114 249 6000.

West Yorkshire Playhouse – Christopher Timothy stars in John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath at West Yorkshire Playhouse, until November 14.

Many will recall Timothy's most famous Yorkshire-based role as veterinary surgeon James Herriot, in the hit TV series All Creatures Great and Small.

Here he is joined by Sorcha Cusack, Oliver Cotton and Damian O'Hare in an adaptation of John Steinbeck's landmark novel.

The Joads – a family of impoverished share-croppers from Oklahoma – lose everything when their farm is repossessed after a devastating drought.

They are seduced by the promise of a better life in the fruitful state of California, and leave their home to make the exhausting, epic Westward trek – crossing an America filled with the hope of a better life for all.

Even when forced to face the possibility that California may not after all be the promised land, they have no choice but to go on.

wrestling: There's a bit of grunting and groaning this evening for wrestling fans when the World Wrestling Entertain-ment RAW presents The DX Invasion tour at Sheffield Arena with the WWE Smackdown /ECW's the Undertaker's Rest in Peace tour tomorrow at the same venue.

THEATRE: Christmas cheer is coming early to Sheffield Lyceum Theatre as Northern Ballet Theatre returns with A Christmas Carol, from Tuesday to Saturday, November 10-14.

A sumptuous parcel of theatre, musical and ballet, NBT's A Christmas Carol tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge's transformation from mealy-mouthed skin-flint to the most famous champion of Christmas spirit.

Eb journeys through time, to be confronted by ghostly visions from his past, present and future.

Lez Brotherston's colourful sets and costumes conjure up a traditional Victorian Christmas, and are perfectly complemented by Carl Davis' festive score, which blends classical music, played live by NBT's Orchestra, with well-known carols sung by the company.

Originally choreographed by Massimo Moricone and directed by Christopher Gable, the production premiered in 1992 at the Theatre Royal, Bath, where it broke all previous box office records.

It has been a much-loved staple in the NBT repertoire ever since and has been toured extensively.

NBT's Artistic Director David Nixon said: "A Christmas Carol has delighted audiences nationwide for more than a decade.

ART: An exhibition of South East Asian art will form the latest must see attraction at Swinton Lock Activity Centre.West Yorkshire arts organisation Manasamitra, are specialists in bringing a variety of South East Asian art forms to communities across Yorkshire, including visual arts, ceramics, textiles, dance and music.

Arts development Worker Kat Hill said: "We'd urge everyone to come along and enjoy the exotic rich paintings, textiles and ceramics on display".
