DONCASTER police and council chiefs are wishing residents a Merry Christmas – with paint messages sprayed in the SNOW!

The Doncaster Safer Partnership will be working together with the police, council and NHS this festive season to reduce alcohol related street violence.

Under the banners of “Don’t get plastered” and “What will your memories of Christmas 2010 be?”, they are warning drinkers that officers will be increasing patrols and taking a zero tolerance stance towards anyone who causes trouble.

To help the campaign along, messages will be sprayed in snow and pavements around the borough in the run up to the festive period, with messages such as “Know Your Limits” and “Be safe, stay together”.

The “What will your memories of Christmas 2010 be?” drive aims to raise awareness of domestic violence against both men and women.

As part of this, the Doncaster domestic violence helpline is increasing its opening hours for the Christmas and New Year period to help victims.

Det Ch Insp Matt Fenwick said: “The two campaigns we are carrying out over the Christmas period aim to deter people from excessive drinking and committing any form of alcohol-related violence.

“The police and our partners take alcohol induced violence very seriously and we will take appropriate action against people who commit these offences.”

Doncaster Council cabinet member, Coun Cynthia Ransome, said: “The Don’t Get Plastered campaign is a fine example of the fantastic work we can achieve when we work with the police and other agencies within the Safer Doncaster Partnership.

“I’m also very pleased to see new and innovative ideas, such as the clean graffiti and snow graffiti, being used to promote important messages.”

Fellow Coun Andrea Milner added: “Domestic violence is a big issue at this time of year and I hope this campaign will help to raise awareness of the many ways you can report domestic abuse.

“I’m glad to see that the council is working closely with the police, and other partners, such as Streetreach and Women’s Aid, to tackle Doncaster’s domestic violence problem.”
