A LANDLADY is celebrating her pub of the year title - with a new tattoo!
As the Barnsley CAMRA’s Cider Pub of the Year, the Anglers’ Rest at Wombwell will host a special ceremony next month.
An engraved plaque will be presented to the pub, that will benefit from extended publicity for its range and quality of ciders.
CAMRA branches make only two annual awards - for Pub of the Year and Cider Pub of the Year.
A committee spokesman said: “Our members vote for specific pubs and we judge on a points system, taking in the range of real ciders on offer, the atmosphere of the pub and its pricing structure.
“In this case, the dedication of Simone, the licensee, in promoting quality drinks and constantly holding new events to involve the community had an impact.
“Simone also does a great job in supporting local producers.”
In the meantime, regulars are busy voting with pieces of silver for a tattoo for landlady Simone Foster-Jowett.
Simone is a big supporter of the Help for Heroes charity and thought of a novel way to add to the cash mountain she has raised so far.
Her three jars on the pub bar sport designs of a Help for Heroes medal, two soldiers supporting a stretcher, and a wrist band - and whichever design attracts the most coins is the one Simone will wear with pride.
The big count-up takes place on June 29 and on June 30, to celebrate Armed Forces Day, she will go under the tattooist’s pen.
“Madness has finally set in,” she told the Times. “I have one tattoo but come the end of June I will have another on my wrist, my chest or my back.
“We have decided to give any profits from the Avon that I run to Help for Heroes to help the fund, as well as proceeds from a swear jar.”
Simone sells wrist bands, lapel pin badges, passport covers, fabric patches, dog tags, and id plates for Help for Heroes. And other activities at the busy pub include book-swaps and sales of fresh eggs and e-cigs. There are also collector banks for mobile phones, printer cartridges, batteries and bra banks.
