OUr old friend, Dave Wright has announced his retirement after 10 years running Elsecar’s Market pub (see page 8 of July 7 edition of the South Yorkshire Times) – and what better way to mark his passing with a trio of old pictures from his walls?
Better still – this week’s Memory Lane also acknowledges his latest CAMRA victory, with a couple of PUB pictures from the past century or so!
The photographs show dray wagon number five, from the famous old Barnsley Brewery, making its way through Elsecar with another brewery lorry behind it.
The blue Marina car parked on the right dates the picture to the late 1960s – and the proud Oakwell Ales trademark emblazoned on it.
Another photographs pictures a much earlier scene of brewery workers getting out their huge barrels of Oakwell Ales – this time on a steam engine!
We reckon this one must have been taken earlier in the last century – but if anyone has further information on the photo we would be pleased to hear from you.
The final photograph shows the celebrations at Reform Row in Elsecar that greeted the end of WWI.
