BUILDING site manager Matt Walters has his first dream racer - and he built it himself!

The self-confessed tinker-holic blames air hostess wife Nicola for his love affair with a Formula Vauxhall racing car....

He rebuilt it to keep himself busy when she was away on long haul flights, and his hobby quickly became a passion.

Matt, 32, who works for Taylor Wimpey Yorkshire at their Wickets development at Upper Haugh, is sponsored by his employers in his sport.

He said: “Basically I’m drawn to anything that moves and has an engine.

“I bought my car 18 months ago for just under £4000. She took me about a year to rebuild. Before this, I’d only tinkered on go-karts.”

As a member of the Monoposto Racing Club, that caters for drivers in single seater cars that no longer have a home, Matt has quickly climbed to eighth position in the championship, racing at top tracks such as Silverstone and Donington in his immaculate 1600 class car.

He said: “My car is 20 years old, so for Taylor Wimpey to back me financially has been crucial. Everyone has really taken an interest.” Anne Bagshaw, regional sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey Yorkshire, said: “Matt is a valued employee and we were more than happy to get right behind him.

“As well as engaging with communities, we feel it is important to engage with our staff. We want to offer support and encouragement where we can, to say thank you for their ongoing hard work.”

Matt described his situation as win-win, saying: “I get to work for Taylor Wimpey and do what I love while endorsing the company in my hobby. I’m completely bowled over by their generosity.”

The manager won’t be seen zooming around Upper Haugh at low level though - his car is strictly for the racetrack, he said, and is capable of reaching a comfortable speed of 140mph.
