Only a week or so to go to before the start of the Autumn/Winter season of live jazz at The Conservative Club.

With jazz avids eagerly awaiting the event with equal excitement to sports fans before the Olympic Games, with the opening session on Thursday September 13, combining the world class talents of trombonist Roy Williams, together with The Nicola Farnon Quartet plus Jon Taylor (reeds) and Roy Norton (trumpet).

Superb trombone stylist Roy is long overdue a visit to Donny, where he often performs in the company of well loved sax and clarinet man Johnny Barnes, The Apex Jazzband, and back in the 60’s with Terry Lightfoot’s Band at the Danum, and of course was a pivotal member of the bands of Alex Welsh and ‘Humph’ Lyttelton.

Salford born Roy began his jazz career playing tailgate trombone in Manchester area jazz bands, rapidly developing his technique and fluency to a degree that ensured rising respect and affection and work with many major jazz luminaries, notably with Alex and Humph, appearing in the film It’s Trad, Dad, often winning Jazz Journal reade’s polls touring with The World’s Greatest Jazzband and The Salute to Satchmo package and even being invited to the legendary Dick Gibson Jazz Party in Colorado being among his numerous achievements.

Fortunately, Roy will be in action on our own doorstep along with the illustrious company of Miss Farnon and her top drawer musicians Piero Tucci (piano/sax), Chris Walker (guitar/vocals), Phil Johnson (drums) and guests Jon Taylor and Roy Norton. and no doubt will receive an enthusiastic Yorkshire welcome even though he is an avid supporter of Lancashire Cricket.

Advance tickets are available at £7 from The Blue Building, High Street or £8 at the door. Ladies Day StLeger racegoers are welcome.

On Monday September10, Dickie Emmerson and Tony Spragg combine their talents for a one-off reunion session at the Con Club, plus guest vocalists - usually including Bob Quinn, Sue Fisher, Eddie Kell & John Noble. Starts at 8.30pm, admission £3.50 at the door.
