Nuns on the run!
"HIT me baby one more time" sang local boxing hero Tommy Joyce and his fellow 'nuns' when they took the stage as part of a charity show staged by local community group KidzduCare.
A packed audience welcomed the all singing all dancing cast onto the stage of The Dearne Playhouse on October 30 as the sell-out show proved a massive success, raising more than 1,000 for the Bluebell Wood Hospice.
The group is part of the Links4Youth project which aims to keep young people off the street and enable them to take part in activities they enjoy. The Mexborough-based group was formed five years ago, and has recently been granted 71,000 by Children in Need to continue its work over the next two years.
As a result the BBC's cameras were at the dress reheasal for the show, and excerpts will appear on the fund-raising evening show on November 20. Thirty children who took part will also be travelling to Halifax to take part in a section of the live broadcast.
Outreach worker Joanne Griffiths said: "The show was fantastic and I want to thank all of the Dearne Playhouse staff, especially theatre manager Julie Medlam, and our volunteers including Maddie Deakin and her mum Helen."
News of the show's success reached a charity in Barnsley and the group has now been asked to help raise funds for the local branch of Chernobyl Children's Life Line which sponsors a trip for children from the area affected by the nuclear accident in 1986 for a holiday with host families in the UK.
Julie said: " We start rehearsals for our next show on November 18 and the plan is to involve the visiting children in the performance which will be in June next year."
The group is open to all young people but under 10s must be accompanied by an adult.
