HOTEL prices in Yorkshire destinations rose year-on-year in the first half of 2011 as budget-conscious Britons stayed at home, according to the latest Hotels.com Hotel Price Index (HPI).

The average room rate in York went up 5% to £88 making it the ninth most expensive destination in the UK in the report.

Sheffield saw a 2% jump to £63 and Leeds was up 1% to £67. The seaside resort of Scarborough saw the biggest leap of 18% to £60.

Hotels.com said the increases were partly due to the “staycation” phenomenon with more Britons taking breaks and booking accommodation at home. There has also been an influx of tourists from the Eurozone making the most of the relative strength of their currency against the Pound.

Matt Walls, vice president of Hotels.com, commented: “Yorkshire has so much to offer, whether it is the culture, nightlife and sport in Leeds and Sheffield, the history and architecture of York, the coast at Scarborough or the beauty of the Dales and Moors.

“These attractions have helped boost demand for hotels in the county and this has led to the price rises.

“There is no doubt that the “staycation” trend has contributed to the appeal of Yorkshire destinations as Britons save their money by staying at home. At the same time, there has been an influx of visitors from mainland Europe and this has kept the hotel sector in Yorkshire in a healthy state.”

The rises were in contrast to the average cost of a hotel room in the UK which fell year-on-year by 1% in the first half of 2011 to £82 a night, according to the report.

However, the overall picture masks some dramatic price movements across the country, with several towns and cities near London and popular tourist destinations seeing an above average percentage rise.

The country’s faltering economy, the relative weakness of the Pound, one-off events, such as the Royal Wedding, and popular culture including TV programmes and pop concerts were among the factors influencing the cost of a room for British travellers in the first six months of 2011.
