Wombwell’s Anglers’ Rest has hooked a top award from the Campaign for Real Ale! The Barnsley branch of CAMRA presented staff with the Winter Pub of the Season award.

A cheque presentation was also made on the night to CAMRA’s chosen charity, the Barnsley Tykes.

Judges described the Park Street boozer as a “great community local” with a homely feeling, complete with wood-burning stove. They praised landlady Simone Foster-Jowett for transforming the venue over the past two years.

She was commended for introducing up to three local cask ales, alongside the permanent Black Sheep Bitter.

The pub was also noted for raising money for the Help for Heroes charity through a swear jar located on the bar.

Phil Gregg, Barnsley CAMRA’s pubs and clubs officer, said: “Simone has done a fantastic job with the pub.

“It has a great atmosphere and a good variety of beers. She and her staff thoroughly deserve the award.”
