MAY I through your letters page express my sincere thanks to the residents of Swinton Ward who supported me in last week's local election. This was the eighth occasion that I have been subject to the polls and I certainly found this time much different than previously.
National issues, encouraged greatly by the national media, dominated the campaign with very little consideration of local authority matters. How many times did we hear phrases such as "judgement on Gordon Brown"; 10p tax rate and the cost of fuel? Further factors included international issues such as the 'Credit Crunch', migration and even membership of the European Union.

During my time as a Swinton Councillor, I have seen amazing improvements to many local facilities and some dramatic regeneration and there is more to come. However, the genuine grievances; passionate and strongly held views of people regarding the wider issues I have referred to, drowned out much consideration of the council's record.
I shall continue to do my best to represent the whole community, regardless of how they voted this year; will work together with any agency or individual, for the benefit of the area, and to deliver the pledges on my manifesto.

Ken Wyatt
Swinton ward councillor, RMBC
