THE UPCOMING Bank Holiday weekend (Saturday and Sunday August 23-24) sees the Darfield Art and Craft Exhibition in the village's church hall.
Due to be opened by Darfield's most famous son, poet Ian Macmillan, the event promises something for everyone including pictures aplenty as well as a diverse range of items including a model of the famous "Skylon" from the 1951 Festival of Britain and a display of antique scent bottles, handbags and compacts.
Children's work is also well represented, with a large collection of pictures from pupils of Valley School and individual work from youngsters of all ages.
Included in the memorabilia section, which celebrates 60 years of the NHS, there is a pair of 90-year-old crutches used in 1918 by a young miner who had been seriously injured at Houghton Main Colliery. His full story is told in the display.
If the treasures on display in the exhibition whet your appetite for culture, the adjacent Darfield Museum will be open all weekend, as will the village's historic church which will play host to a series of paintings of the River Dearne by Iain Nicholls.
The exhibition will be open from 10am-5pm on Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sunday.
