Picture special - Pupils get a taste of life in the war years
PUPILS and staff at Dearne High School got to experience a little of what life was like during World War Two when they held a 1940s day.
Teachers dressed up as land girls and army officers and pupils used chalk and slates instead of pens and paper during lessons.
Students were also issued with ration cards, giving them the opportunity to sample spam sandwiches and milk for their break time snacks.
They were shown the various rations of food people were allowed per week during war-time Britain.
An air raid siren also sounded and all of the pupils ducked underneath their tables, just like their peers would have in the 1940s.
Thurnscoe Local History Group had a display in the main hall with various artefacts from WWII including gas masks.
The Qdos Dance Theatre group also treated the pupils to a short play about an injured soldier fighting the war.
The Goldthorpe-based secondary school has now got specialist status in Humanities and the 1940s day was held last Friday to help celebrate Specialist School Week.
