Club claw their way back from the brink
NON-LEAGUE SPOTLIGHT: FRICKLEY ATHLETIC
The first half of the season has been one to forget for Frickley Athletic as they languish at the foot of the Unibond Premier Division.
With only three wins under their belt The Blues are a troubled side, a fact resonated through the managerial chaos that has taken place at Westfield Lane over the past few months.
Billy Heath has been, gone and come back again to the Frickley hotseat with his two stints as boss sandwiching a disastrous spell for Mark Hancock.
THE SEASON SO FAR
Although the club suffered a number of break-ins and lost the sponsorship of GMB, an air of optimism for the on-field matters surrounded, with a solid and positive pre-season raising hopes that the struggles in the previous campaign were just a blip.
A win over Kendal Town in the penultimate game secured their Premier League status for another year after a poor final third of the season saw them slip into trouble and The Blues were hoping to avoid a similar nail-biting finish this time around.
Heath managed to tie down a number of players for another year in South Elmsall while the arrival of the experienced Chris White was one of a few positive moves.
However, this season has proved to be a struggle from the off with defeat after defeat and a lack of goals seeing Frickley rooted to the bottom of the league for the vast majority of the campaign so far.
As the club crashed out of the FA Cup first qualifying round to lower league Stocksbridge Park Steels and sat at the foot of the table with just three points from eight games, Billy Heath and his assistant resigned their positions and left the club.
In came fan favourite Mark Hancock as manager to steady the ship and with the signing of veteran striker Neil Redfearn there was reason for optimism at Westfield Lane.
Though Hancock led the side to their first win of the season with the FA Trophy victory at Prescott Cables, league form did not change and the club began to slip further away from safety.
Redfearn soon departed South Elmsall to concentrate on his business interests while the talented Nathan Hotte left for North Ferriby United.
The desperation of the club truly became evident when Hancock was relieved of his duties just five games into his tenure with Athletic still looking for their first league win.
Hancock's swift departure looks to have been a turning point in The Blues' season with an excellent 2-2 draw at high-flying Eastwood Town and a 2-0 League Cup victory over Yorkshire rivals Ossett Town within a week of his sacking ending the goal drought and showing signs that there is fight left in the wounded animal.
Sensationally, Billy Heath and Mark Carroll returned to the club as a caretaker management team and the move immediately bore fruit as Frickley grabbed their first league win of the season with a 2-1 win over Kendal Town.
