SHOPPERS had the chance to get their hands on the sought-after Paralympic Torch at a Doncaster supermarket.

The torch had travelled to 40 Sainsbury’s stores across the country in ten days and stopped off at the Thorne Road supermarket in Edenthorpe.

It was one of 620 torches used in the 24-hour relay.

Wheelchair basketballers from Danum Eagles, a Sainsbury’s chosen charity, were also invited to see the icon.

Store manager Andy Yeomans said: “We’ve really enjoyed playing our part in raising awareness of the London 2012 Paralympic Games in Doncaster. For our customers, it’s a once in a lifetime chance for them to see the torch and feel the buzz of the Paralympic Games.”

Staff also won the chance to go to the Games’ Olympic Park on Monday and watch wheelchair basketball games.
