AN extravaganza of dance, cuisine and culture marked one of Doncaster’s biggest ever celebrations of the Hindu festival Diwali.

Guests taking part in the multi-cultural event at The Dome on Saturday included many members of the community as well as Mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies.

The action-packed programme of events included Bollywood dancing and music as well as a four-course meal.

About 200 people went along to take part in the celebrations, which also included performances from band, Echo International.

One of the event organisers Rekha Jadhav said: “It went really well. We have held Diwali events before but not as many people have come.

“Everyone seemed to have a really good time. The entertainment was great with children as young as six taking part.

“We also had a puppet show from the Black Cat Theatre Company.”

The committee which organised the Diwali Festival will meet early in the new year to discuss plans for next year.

Mrs Jadhav added: “We’re not quite sure what kind of event we’ll organise for next year but we are sure that we will continue to do our annual Diwali function for the community.”
