Rovers stars hit the net with phone calls to fans
DONCASTER Rovers aces are used to scoring success on the field – now they are ringing up success off it too by dialling up fans with surprise phone calls.
Keepmoat Stadium stars have been drafted in to encourage supporters to renew their season tickets, by calling fans directly to chat about the club’s fortunes this season and get them to commit to the new campaign.
Goalkeeper Gary Woods, midfielders Paul Keegan and James Coppinger, striker Iain Hume and young starlets Liam Wakefield and Jordan Ball have all taken their turn in the ticket office hotseat, which came about after supporters urged the club to develop stronger links with its fanbase.
Marketing manager Shaun Lockwood said the calls were part of the In Rovers We Trust campaign.
This initiative was set up between the club and supporter groups to work more closely together.
He said: “It is all about fan engagement and increasing the value of the supporters to the club and help them feel that its their club.
“In the past, many clubs have been viewed as being a bit arrogant towards their supporters so we’ve been working to change that.”
He added: “It is all about going the extra mile for supporters and by getting players to speak to fans, we are bringing the club closer to people.”
Keegan and Woods were the first to have a stint on the end of the line with Hume and Coppinger taking up their roles with the receiver yesterday.
“The feedback has been great,” said Mr Lockwood. “It has been a real eye-opener for the fans and the players too. Everyone has really enjoyed it.”
