Campaign for cruelty-free fashion

Sir, Society is becoming increasingly worried about exploitation and injustice in the world. As a result we are buying more fair trade, more organic and more eco friendly products than ever before, and this includes the clothes on our backs.

With all this worrying about exploiting people and the planet, it seems strange that not many people stop to consider the animals.

Fur, wool, leather and silk are all produced by the exploitation. Around 50 million animals are killed each year for their fur. Rabbit, mink and fox are the most commonly bred. China is the biggest exporter of fur and has absolutely no laws to protect animals; they are often skinned whilst fully conscious.

Leather comes from both beef and dairy cattle, who are slaughtered while still young and whose lives are entirely under human control.

For silk production, moths in cocoons are placed in scalding water and boiled alive.

Viva! has recently launched a campaign against the exploitation of animals for the fashion trade, to find out about how you can be cruelty-free and fashionable please visit www.thebigcoverup.org.uk.
